Wandering America

Betty's RV Park
Abbeville, LA

Does the town of Abbeville, LA ring a bell?  Probably not, it's a small town south of Lafayette, LA which is located along Interstate 10.  There's nothing there that would attract tourism unless, of course, you are an RVer.  RVers, especially fulltimers, recognize Abbeville as the home of Betty's RV Park.  Betty's is not your typical RV park that has been created to just meet your RVing needs, although it does that with level sites, full hook-ups, free WIFI, and free cable TV.  No, Betty's is more than that, it's an RVing experience.

First of all, Betty's has something that no other RV Park in the country can boast, Betty.  Betty loves to socialize with RVers and has a double portion of southern hospitality.  You can sit in your RV and watch TV or surf the Internet if you want to, but you would be cheating yourself out one of the most unique experiences of your RVing life.  You see, Betty's RV Park is built around her home which has a back porch that hosts a daily happy hour and this is what makes this park special.

The happy hour is held at 4:30 PM with Betty hosting.  You bring your drinks and some snack food to pass (preferably something that is unique from your heritage) and be ready share your appetizers and experiences with others.  Betty's only has 15 sites which is just the right size to allow you to bond together.  Once a week there is a pot luck dinner that is sure to have some good ol' fashion southern home cooking.  But that is not all, Betty often schedules outings for the entertainment of her guests.  It could be a visit to a crawfish farm, or a play at the Abbeville Playhouse, or some dining experience, etc. etc.

While we were there we wanted to sample some Cajun cooking for lunch so Betty gave us the directions to one of her favorite spots.  After driving seven miles outside of town, to the middle of nowhere, we came to an intersection where there was nothing but Suire's Grocery and Restaurant.  This is one of those places that you would most likely go flying by without even a second thought of stopping.  Betty had suggested a shrimp Po-Boy, we had never even heard of a Po-Boy before so we gave it a try.  It was made with Cajun fried shrimp, lettuce, and tomatoes on a special bun with a special mayo sauce - and it was yummy.  We had eaten at the Riverside Restaurant the evening before and had had a good meal, but I bet Suire's baskets would give them a run for their money - at half the price no less.

We were only there for two days which is no where near a long enough time, ya gotta plan on spending at least a week.  We'll definately be back.  "It's like no place else in the world."
